Choose one exchange, not a whole doctrine
The current ChineseStudy Mencius contents offer 23 sections from Liang Hui Wang I and II. Start with one exchange. The Mencius introduction gives background, but keep the ruler’s immediate question beside your notes. The published selection is not the whole received Mencius.
Notice how the question changes
In Why Speak of Gain?, the king asks what will benefit his state. Mencius turns to benevolence and what is right, then considers what happens when different ranks pursue their own advantage. Write two separate sentences: what the king asks, and what Mencius wants him to consider. This keeps the reply from shrinking into an isolated slogan.
In the original, locate 利, 仁, and 義 or 义. Use the English translation to follow the exchange, then return to each occurrence. Ask whose interest is under discussion and whether the same English term serves every sentence equally well.
Work through an analogy step by step
Continue with The King and His People, which includes the comparison of retreating fifty and a hundred paces. Before applying it to government, write down the imagined situation and the king’s response. Then identify the comparison Mencius draws.
Keep three questions distinct: what is similar in the example, what difference seems important at first, and why does Mencius think that difference does not settle the matter? Treat the analogy as a move in this conversation. Test its role against the discussion of livelihood that follows.
Try a four-line argument map
Write the ruler’s question, Mencius’s example or reason, the conclusion, and one doubt of your own. Add the passage URL and reading language. If an arrow between two steps is unclear, mark it as a question instead of supplying a missing premise without saying so.
Return to the words before comparing thinkers
Read your map alongside the original and revise one sentence. Later, compare a short exchange in the Analects: does the speaker redirect a question in the same way? One supported comparison is enough. Readers using modern Chinese explanations can open 《孟子》 and keep the same reading task.
Keep the chapter open beside your reading note.
